The Latino Family Literacy Project is a nation-wide program designed to bring literacy and knowledge into the home of Spanish-speaking families with children from toddlers through high school. The College Awareness & Skills series is an effective, interactive parent-child program designed to build early college awareness by exploring the cultural and familial situations that arise within Latino families. Families engaged in 4 sessions over the course of 4 weeks, which included visits from Napa Valley College, Ms. Surber (College & Career Coordinator), and Mrs. Craig-Morales.
The Project was facilitated by Guadalupe Maldonado from the UpValley Family Centers. Born in Michoacan, Mexico, Lupe came to the United States as an infant. She graduated from Calistoga Junior -Senior High School and went on to graduate from Sonoma State University with a degree in Sociology.
Parent comment on evaluation:
“The class gave us a lot of information, and it helped us become closer to the teachers and counselors. We realize now there is a lot of help.”
Student comment on evaluation:
“The class helped me because Graciela (from the story “Graciela’s Dream”) gave me an example of how I can go speak to the school counselor, how I can apply for a university, and how I can begin the process.”
